Due to the peculiar existence of monsters within the VS universe, their rituals and practices surrounding death have specifically evolved to facilitate the calming of spirits and prevention of these sad creatures. A body left too long has the ability to turn into any number of terrifying and often incredibly deadly monsters, Due to this fact, it is of the utmost importance that a body be notified and brought to lantern bearers almost as soon as they die to prevent anything dangerous from occurring.

Once a body is received by the lantern bearers, they will recite the death rites over the body and perform the ritual to calm the restless spirit inside the body while it waits for one of the lantern sisters to arrive to guide it into the next life. This is a specific and very particular ritual, and takes an incredible amount of precision and practice to perform correctly, which is why only lantern bearers are capable of performing it.

 

While the lantern bearers put the deceased's soul to rest, the family and friends of the deceased host a memorial party to remember the departed. The memorial parties in the clowders are much closer to a celebration of life than a mourning of death, as the cats know with 100% certainty that there is an afterlife for them, they know that death is just a small hiccup in the road between them and their loved ones. These memorial parties often feature a centerpiece, and this centerpiece is an object or objects that were beloved deeply by the departed or otherwise were heavily associated with them. For cats who didn't really own anything, these parties simply do not have a centerpiece.
